Golf used to be a game that admittedly was only played by the upper classes, predominantly by men too. As time has gone by the sport has had an explosion of mass appeal with the sport now being played by a wide range of people from all walks of life. There are even children's, women's and senior's tournaments which goes to show that the popularity of the sport has soared in recent years.

Despite his recent headlines players like Tiger Woods have rejuvenated the sport to appeal to a younger audience as one of the youngest players to win major tournaments such as the Masters in April 1996, his first major win. There are other young players like Britain's Justin Rose and America's Michelle Wie that have inspired boys and girls to take up the sport and even adults too.

Many of these players will not have played golf before and whilst you can 'learn by doing' it is much easier and advisable to learn from a golf tutor. Being a golf tutor you will have likely played professionally as many golf tutors set up residence at golf courses local to them offering lessons to new and experienced golfers. Most golf tutors are PGA professionals who have a wealth of knowledge about the game of golf and can set people on the right track.

A big part of becoming a golf coach is being able to correct any problems with people's swing and shots. Some coaches may use video cameras to play back in slow motion what the golfer is doing wrong. Analysing the stance, the motion and the grip of the club is a key part of a golf tutor finding out what is wrong with their golf swing and can take steps to help them correct it.

Sometimes as a golf coach you will be asked what is the best equipment or clubs to buy and you have a responsibility to advise your golfers of what is best for their skill level. Buying expensive clubs will be pointless as these tend to be suited to professionals and more experienced players. A good quality beginners set of clubs with enlarged 'sweet spots' that are more forgiving when it comes to hitting the ball off centre would be better. There are other items you should recommend such as golf gloves which can help new golfers get a good grip of their clubs and help add power to their swing.

Being a golf coach can be testing as well as having some risks you need to be aware of such as personal liability and loss or damage to equipment. Dedicated golf coach insurance can help protect you against these issues as well as many golf specific risks that regular sports coach cover may not cover.
