For those people starting out playing this wonderful game of golf, all the advice and opinions regarding the golf swing must be quite intimidating.

If one were to take all that they hear seriously, swinging a golf club must seem more complicated than brain surgery.

Ihave put down a few golf tips for new golfers with the intention of simplifying, not complicating the golf swing.

So to simplify, in order to strike a golf ball consistently with as little side spin as possible, will look at three areas:

1. The set-up.

Rather than setting up to the ball with the idea of generating as much club speed as possible (you are not there yet), think about being in a position to hit the ball squarely, and not a slicing, or glancing blow.

If you were to look down on the ball, and the target area would be twelve o’clock on the ball, ideally you would want to hit the ball at about seven o’clock and would exit the ball at about one o’clock. If done with a club head that is square to the ball (not opened or closed), you should be able to send the ball with a slight counter clockwise spin, or hook spin. For the new golfer, that will give you the maximum distance.

2. Balance.

Of all the golf tips for the new golfers, this may may be the most important, as it is impossible for any golfer at any level to be consistent without maintaining proper balance. But rather than get into a long discussion on everything that goes into balance, let us keep it simple. Think about keeping the spine straight and upright during the swing.

Maintaining a straight spine will allow an unrestricted rotation with the least resistance, making for less moving parts. It will also keep the head still, allowing you to better focus on the ball during the swing. A straight spine with some bend in the hips and knees will allow you to be more balanced, giving you more consistent ball-striking.

3. Ball concentration.

There is a big difference between looking at the ball during the swing and having a total, laser-like focus on the ball. It is something that is not talked about because everyone assumes you automatically keep your “eye on the ball”. But that is not enough.

I read once that a professional golfer would, on his way to the tee, juggle two balls in one hand in order to make him better concentrate on the ball. Whatever training aid you use to help you with your ball concentration is great, but as one of the golf tips for new golfers, this is a must. Obviously these only scratch the surface, but at this point your golf training should be kept simple, without getting too technical. But I congratulate you on trying to improve yourself in an endeavour that certainly has many components.
